The Connection at St Martin-in-the-Fields
Everyone who has visited central London will have seen homeless people sleeping rough on the streets - in shop doorways, outside theatres and stations. And there many hundreds more people in central London who are 'hidden homeless' - who drift from place to place but have no secure home.
Although there are hostels and night shelters, there are simply not enough places to go round, and homeless people rely on charities, churches and local groups for food and other help.
St Martin-in-the-Fields has a long tradition of caring for homeless people and those at risk of homelessness. This work continues with the Connection at St Martin-in-the-Fields, formed in April 2003 from a merger between St Martin-in-the-Fields Social Care Unit (working with rough sleepers and other vulnerable homeless people) and the London Connection (which helped young homeless people).
