After nearly a decade in the planning and two years hidden behind hoarding everything is set to celebrate the Renewal of St Martin-in-the-Fields.

From 27 April to 18 May, Celebrate! Festival-in-the-Fields 2008 marks this special time in the history of St Martin’s with a festival of discovery, music and church events. Join us throughout this three-week period for a chance to experience the new spaces created by the Renewal Project and reacquaint yourself with old spaces that have been gloriously restored.

Sunday 27 April

Our Thanksgiving Festival begins ‘at home’ as we celebrate the renewal of our buildings by focusing on the St Martin’s community. The preacher at 10.00am is the Archbishop of Hong Kong, the Most Revd Paul Kwong – a reminder that ‘home’ for many of our community stretches well beyond the limits of Trafalgar Square! We end the day with a service of Choral Evensong at 5.00pm.

Ring out the Bells!

Prior to the Thanksgiving service, St Martin’s Bellringers will mark the occasion with a special Peal of bells. On the same day, the Swan Bells in Perth, Australia – including 12 bells from St Martin’s dating from before the 14th century, recast during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and again during the 18th century – will be ringing out in celebration as part of the Australia and New Zealand Association of Bellringers Annual Festival.

Sacred Spaces – An Exploration

What constitutes a ‘sacred space’? And how do our buildings – ancient and contemporary – help us to express the concept? Reflecting on our renewed church building, and the new complex of underground spaces, three renowned speakers help us explore the fascinating subject of ‘sacred space’ from a variety of angles – theological, architectural, cultural and sociological.
Margaret Barker is an Old Testament scholar well known for her writings on the theology and liturgy of the Jewish Temple and its influence on the Christian community.
Professor Philip Sheldrake of Durham University has a particular interest in the role of religion and society and the concept of the sacred space in the secular world.
Eric Parry is the architect whose vision has inspired the Renewal of St Martin’s, in a design which holds together the glories of the Baroque era with a contemporary expression of the sacred.
Tickets: £25 (£20 concessions) including a buffet lunch.
