Opportunities for faith education at St Martin's
There are on-going opportunities for the education of adults and young people at St Martin's. These include a Bible Study Group, a Children's Club, Confirmation Classes and occasional lectures. There are also regular opportunities for informal discussion on faith issues through "Godly Gossip" and contemporary exploration of scripture through "Biblical Beanfeast". Both of these are held at Sunday lunchtimes at times and dates posted in the weekly newsletter in church or on the Parish News page of this website.
There is also a rolling programme of courses, lectures, seminars, group work, one-day events and weekends away. See Current Programme for more details.
September 2005 Education: Gathering on the portico to explorethe church building
Faith education at St Martin's is for regular members of our congregation and those visitors who simply pass through and wish to use this resource. In view of the unique position which St Martin's holds in the life of London, the Anglican church and the wider community, it is a specific aim of our faith education programme to develop as a significant theological resource to be offered more widely.
The Education Committee implements and reviews the ongoing parish education programme and establishes other educational opportunities to deepen our understanding and fellowship as Christians.
Rod Beadles is Chair of the Education Committee and Revd. Richard Carter is the Clergy link.
The Education Committee of the Parochial Church Council, in conversation with the clergy, is responsible to the PCC for decisions regarding faith education at St Martins.

The ethos of faith education at St Martin's
The theology of this community is rooted in a belief in the Triune God as distinctively revealed in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and enabled by the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. It is characterised by openness, hospitality, questioning, the honouring of risk, mystery, diversity and the inclusivity of human experience. It takes seriously the diversity of our community and seeks to develop a theological language with which to explore this diversity.
The faith education programme at St Martin's looks to explore our lives and the society of which we are part in the context of the distinctive Christian story. It involves people's heads, hearts and lifestyles in active and critical reflection on the presence and activity of God in our lives as individuals, as a community and in wider society. It endeavours to engage in creative conversation with other world faiths and with people of no specific religious allegiance. It therefore looks both to encourage disciplined theological reflection on the experiences we bring, and to challenge preconceptions in the light of this reflection.
