Music at St Martin's

The church of St Martin-in-the-Fields enjoys one of the finest musical reputations in the world. Since 1726 it has played host to some of the greatest musicians: Handel and Mozart both played on the Schrider organ of 1727 and a former Director of Music founded the Academy of St Martin in the Fields here in the 1950s with Sir Neville Marriner.

St Martin's £36 million renewal project has transformed the church both inside and out and created iconic new buildings and public spaces.  Natural light now floods into the church; the glorious decorative plasterwork has been restored; the pulpit has been relocated close to its orginal position improving sightlines and the chancel area has been reordered providing a more flexible performing space.  At crypt and lower crypt level a purpose built music rehearsal room, named after Sir Neville Marriner, and a suite of changing rooms are available for use by our visiting musicians.
